Cable Identification

Technical cable and circuit identification to support planned works and fault investigation.

Cable identification can help establish the correct circuit or cable within a group before planned work or repair. It is a technical identification service and does not replace the client or network operator’s applicable safety rules, proving-dead or spiking procedures.

Safety boundary: electronic cable identification supports the work but does not replace the applicable safety rules, isolation, proving-dead, earthing or spiking requirements imposed by the network owner/operator.

What the service can include

  • Cable identification in trenches and substations
  • Circuit identification support
  • Phase/conductor identification where applicable
  • Support during fault investigation
  • Clear limitations around operational safety procedures

What we need from you

Send the site location, network voltage, approximate cable length and type if known, what protection operated, any existing IR/continuity test results and whether the cable route is known. Photos of terminations, switchgear labels, drawings or previous test records are useful where available.

Repair after location

Where a fault position is confirmed and the cable is safely isolated and accessible, suitable repair works can be coordinated through R&D Cable Jointing .

Have an underground cable fault?

Send us the voltage, site location and what you know so far. We’ll tell you what the next sensible step is.
